uncle dirty

this is a pretty amazing photo journal
about a guy's uncle, aptly named Uncle Dirty.

i started a similar series of photos
on my grandmother some years ago.
she has an amazing story
and i was unable to finish telling it
before she succumbed to Alzheimer's.

taking her picture began to make her agitated.
she wanted to fix her hair first or
she'd become ashamed of her state and get sad.

people with Alzheimer's can say
some very cruel things and behave violently
but it's because they have no emotional filter
and are full of rage, depression and fear
at the complete betrayal of their body and minds.

sometimes she'd forget who i was
and become scared at the stranger
taking her photo.
or in those rare moments of clarity,
she'd look at me and 1/2 smile,
the other 1/2 being lost to paralysis from a stroke.

my grandmother was an amazing woman.

anyway, this series of photos is very inspiring
and has given me a brilliant idea to
make peace with the project I was
unable to finish.

more to come.

finish it
because one of my favorite things to shoot was an older couple in which the wife cancer had come back and her husband knew that her time was going to be short so i got asked to spend a day with them
it was a really somber sweet experience
but now him and her her family have a record of her before she passed away a few months later
